As part of the virtual 2021 AHS National Convention, the Ed Elslager Hybridizing Society will host a seedling competition. The contest will showcase the best new cultivars which are under development by both amateur and experienced hybridizers alike, and will give convention attendees a sneak peak of some of the most exciting new hosta originations!
Dr. Ed Elslager (1924-2005), a Michigan resident, was a chemical scientist by profession and a hosta lover supreme. Demonstrating excellent skills in growing hostas around his lakefront home, Dr. Elslager’s passion was to improve all things in hosta.
Under this wonderful vision, he set about organizing a group of individuals who were interested in hybridizing. Thus, the Hosta Hybridizers Club was born, convener Ed Elslager. The Hosta Science Journal was also a creation of Dr. Elslager, with many articles written by presenters at the Hybridizers meetings. Ed Elslager registered over 240 cultivars including, at the time, both the first and the last on the registration list, to his delight. Members of the Hosta Hybridizers Club, now renamed the Ed Elslager Hybridizing Society in tribute to Dr. Elslager who was the founder, have named and dedicated this seedling contest in his honor and memory.
An $8.00 entry fee will be charged to all registrants who enter the seedling competition. This fee is in addition to the convention registration fee and will be collected within the registration process. The funds will go to the Ed Elslager Hybridizing Society to acquire awards for the contestants. There will be two awards for each class – one awarded by the judging panel and the other by the convention attendees.
The registrants of the convention are requested to select winners of each class as well as the People’s Choice Award ( Best of Show chosen by Attendees ) by voting on-line using the various password-protected galleries. The Password will be provided to registrants before the first day of voting, July 8, 2021. The last day to vote for the Seedling Competition awards will be Friday, July 16, 2021. The results will be announced during Saturday evening’s final convention presentation.
Photos will be retained by the Ed Elslager Hybridizing Society, and the winning selections will remain on the convention website until the site is removed.
